The electron plasma frequency, also known as the plasma frequency, is a characteristic frequency that describes the collective motion of electrons in a plasma.

In a plasma, the positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons interact with each other through Coulomb interactions. When a disturbance is applied to the plasma, such as an electric field, the electrons are displaced from their equilibrium positions and begin to oscillate collectively at a certain frequency.

The stability arises due to relative motion between the ions (ion stream) and electron (electron stream) is two stream instability. For the derivation of dispersion relation, we consider that observer is in the frame of reference of ions and the electron have a relative velocity vo with respect to ions. Further consider that plasma is fold.

And magnetic field is absent i.e B=0

The motion is considered only x axis and the parameter like velocity density and electric field has equilibrium part and a small time dependent harmonically perturbed part; the product and higher order of perturbed part are negligible.

is the electron plasma frequency. The plasma frequency is an important parameter in the study of plasmas because it determines the behaviour of electromagnetic waves propagating through the plasma. Waves with frequencies below the plasma frequency are strongly absorbed, while waves with frequencies above the plasma frequency can propagate through the plasma with minimal absorption. This makes the plasma frequency a critical parameter in the design of plasma-based technologies such as plasma processing and plasma-based propulsion systems.

This equation 5 is known as dispersion relation for two stream instability. In particular, the two-stream instability occurs when the frequency of the waves generated by the electron beams is close to the plasma frequency. This is because the plasma has a resonant response to waves at its natural frequency, leading to a build up of wave energy and the development of the instability.

Therefore, the two-stream instability can be understood in terms of the interplay between the kinetic energy of the electron beams and the plasma frequency. By controlling the velocity and density of the beams, or by modifying the plasma properties, it may be possible to mitigate the effects of the instability and enhance plasma processes.
