Epassport Nepal - Information
What is an epassport?
A Nepali e-Passport contains an electronic chip. The chip holds the same information that is printed on the passport's data page: the holder's name, date of birth, and other biographic information. An e-Passport also contains a biometric identifier.
How long does it take to get an ePassport from the Department?
It generally takes 2 to 3 working days after the enrollment. However, if the details of citizenship, National Identity Card, old passport, etc. are not verified or photograph as per ICAO criteria is not met, further investigation is required. Unfortunately, passports may not be available on time despite emergency service due to software upgrades or any other technical reasons. So, the Department kindly requests the applicants to book tickets or make necessary travel arrangements only after the passport is received.
From where can we apply for regular ePassport services ?
The regular service for ePassports is available from all the District Administration Offices in Nepal and all Nepali Diplomatic Missions abroad.
How long does it take to get an electronic passport after doing live enrollment in the districts?
Passports will be available in all the three districts of Kathmandu Valley within a week. Passports will be available within 15 days on the Mahendra Highway outside Kathmandu and surrounding districts and districts with air facilities. After receiving the passport at the district administration offices, an SMS will be sent to the applicant's mobile to collect the passport.
What to do if a message of rejection of application is received?
Please contact the rejection counter no. 11 'A' at Department of Passports. If the provided reason for rejection is understood then you may directly visit the enrollment center for biometrics at room no. 112. The rejected pre enrollment form will be valid for next 15 days of the enrollment. If it exceeds 15 days, you will have to fill up another pre enrollment form, verify it at local verification unit and visit room no. 112.
Do you need a letter of authorization in addition to the national identity card for urgent passport service?
Even if the national identity card is submitted, the department may demand an open letter of authenticity as per its needs for further verification. However, it has been made mandatory in case of minor identity cards.
