A lot of homes don't have a laptop anymore. There's a phone, maybe a tablet, and that's the whole computing situation. Then a printer arrives with a setup address printed on the box, and that address was written on the assumption that you're sitting at a desk.

You can do the entire thing from a phone. It works on every current printer from Canon, HP, Epson, and Brother. But the path is different enough from the desktop one that following instructions written for a computer will leave you stuck about four steps in.

What the setup address gives a phone

Type ij.start.canon into a phone browser and you won't get a driver, because phones don't use drivers. You'll get pointed at Canon's mobile app instead. The same thing happens with 123.hp.com/setup, which hands phones over to HP Smart. An Epson printer setup on mobile runs through Epson Smart Panel, and a Brother printer setup goes through Brother Mobile Connect.

So the address still works, it just acts as a signpost to the app store rather than a download page. If you'd rather skip a step, search the app store directly for the brand's app. You'll land in the same place.

Install the app before you touch the printer. All four apps expect to be running while the printer is still in its out-of-box state, and that state doesn't last forever.

The part that trips everyone up

A brand new printer broadcasts its own temporary Wi-Fi network. Your phone joins that network so the app can talk to the printer, the app then passes your real Wi-Fi details across, and the printer switches over to your home network. Three networks in one sequence, and the phone has to move between them at the right moments.

Here's the problem. The printer's temporary network has no internet. Modern phones hate that. An iPhone will show a warning and, depending on your settings, quietly fall back to mobile data. Android does something similar and often switches away on its own. The moment your phone leaves the printer's network mid-setup, the app loses the printer and reports that setup failed.

Turn mobile data off before you start. Just for five minutes. This single step fixes more failed phone setups than everything else combined, because it forces the phone to stay where the app needs it.

After it joins your network

Once the printer is on your home Wi-Fi, an iPhone or iPad can print to it with no app at all. AirPrint is built into iOS, and the printer shows up in the share sheet under Print as long as the phone and the printer are on the same network. That last part matters more than people expect.

Android handles it through a print service built into the system. On most current phones this is already switched on and printers appear automatically. On some it's sitting in settings under printing, turned off, waiting for someone to find it. If your printer doesn't show up when you tap print, check there before assuming anything is broken.

The brand apps are still worth keeping. Basic printing doesn't need them, but ink levels, scanning, paper tray settings, and firmware updates all live inside the app.

Same network means the same network

This is where most "my phone can't find the printer" messages end up.

If your router splits its bands into two names, your phone might be on the 5 GHz one while the printer sits on 2.4 GHz. Some routers keep those separate enough that the two devices can't see each other. Guest networks do this deliberately, so a printer set up on the guest network is invisible to a phone on the main one, and the other way round.

A VPN on your phone has the same effect. It routes your traffic out through somewhere else entirely, and the printer sitting three feet away is no longer on the path. Private DNS settings can interfere too. If printing works with the VPN off and fails with it on, you've found it, and most VPN apps let you exclude your home network.

Wi-Fi Direct is not the same as being on your network

Every one of these printers supports Wi-Fi Direct, and it gets confused with normal setup constantly.

Wi-Fi Direct is the printer's own network, used permanently rather than just during setup. Your phone connects straight to the printer, bypassing your router completely. It's genuinely useful when there's no router, when the router is down, or when you're printing from a phone that isn't allowed on the house network.

The trade-off is that while your phone is connected to the printer this way, it isn't on your home Wi-Fi. No internet unless mobile data picks up the slack. It also means each person who wants to print has to switch networks, print, and switch back, which gets old fast in a household.

Use Wi-Fi Direct as a fallback. Get the printer onto the house network for everyday use.

Scanning back to a phone

Scanning is the one thing that genuinely requires the brand app. There's no equivalent of AirPrint for pulling a scan onto a phone, so the app is doing real work here rather than just adding a logo.

Put the page down, open the app, choose scan, and the file comes back to the phone where you can save it or share it. Most of these apps will also stack several pages into one PDF and straighten a photo taken through the camera, which covers the usual reason someone needs a scan in the first place.

One habit saves trouble later. Once everything works, open your router's admin page and reserve the printer's address so it always gets the same one. Phones cache the printer's location, and when the address shifts after a power cut, the printer vanishes from the print menu with no explanation. Reserving it takes two minutes and means the setup you just did keeps working.
