Identification of materials:

By using Moseley's law, we can identify an unknown element by using it as target. For this we study the X ray spectrum emitted by unknown electron with the help of X ray spectrometer and determine the wavelength of corresponding X ray. Then the frequency will be obtained. Using Moseley's law, we can find the atomic number Z of unknown element. Since

𝛾 = a (z - b)² ......1

For K_𝛼 line b_1 = 1

𝛾 = a (z - 1)² ....2

Now for two elements with atomic number z_1 and z_2, we can derived following relation from relation 2

𝛾_1 / 𝛾_2 = (z_1 - 1)² / (z_2 - 1)²

𝜆_2 / 𝜆_1 = (z_1 - 1)² / (z_2 - 1)² .....3

Using equation 3 if we know the atomic number of an element emitting K_𝛼 line with wavelength then atomic number of unknown element emitting same radiation can be determined. It can also be used to check whether the element contains impurities or not.

Correct placement of the elements in periodic table

The real significance of atomic number z hadn't been detected before Moseley's research. Moseley's law show that the elements in periodic table must be arranged according to increasing order of atomic number not according to atomic weight

Mendeleev had arranged the elements in periodic table according to increasing atomic weight. In this arrangement same discrepancy were noticed. For example, Mendeleev placed Nickel before Cobalt since Nickel has low atomic weight then Cobalt but chemical properties shows that Cobalt should be placed before Nickel according to chemical properties. Also Moseley's diagram for K_𝛼 line show that frequency of K_𝛼 line emitted by Nickel is larger than emitted by cobalt. Thus the equation

𝛾_k𝛼 = 3/ 4 RC (z - b)² ; b = 1 suggest that

Nickel has larger atomic number than Cobalt. This discrepancy is removed by Moseley by placing Cobalt before Nickel according to the increasing order of z. Similarly, he placed Argon before K. In this way, Moseley arrange the elements correctly in periodic table. Furthermore during the arrangement of elements, Moseley left gap at z = 72 and z = 43. This hope to discover the element z = 72 and 43 hadn't been discovered. This hope to discover the element z = 72 and z = 43 Technetium and periodic table is fulfilled.
