Enabling Prosperity of Indigenous Community through Tharu Museum at Phulauria, Chitwan

The Tharu Museum at Phulauria, located in Rapti Municipality–6, Bhandara, Chitwan, is a community-led initiative dedicated to preserving, promoting, and showcasing the rich cultural heritage and traditional way of life of the Tharu Indigenous people of Nepal. Phulauria and surrounding Tharu villages, including Beldia, Hardi, Mudavar, Mahal, Dhamaura, Laukain, Padaria, Gothauli, and Kathar, are located near Chitwan National Park, an important tourist destination visited by thousands of visitors every year.

The project aims to establish the museum as a new cultural tourism destination in Chitwan, connecting visitors with the history, culture, traditions, and everyday life of the Tharu community. One building of the museum complex has already been completed and is actively used by local Tharu people for traditional dancing, community meetings, seminars, cultural programs, and other social activities. This building has already become an important community space and demonstrates the strong local ownership of the project.

The planned museum will feature a traditional Tharu house model, showcasing distinctive architectural designs, vibrant colors, and the traditional way of living. It will display valuable cultural artifacts such as traditional rice containers, cooking stoves, baskets, fishing nets, bows and other tools, traditional clothing, jewelry, and household items that are gradually disappearing from present-day Tharu homes. Many of these artifacts will be collected from local families who have carefully preserved them through generations.

However, the museum project is still incomplete due to a lack of adequate funding. Further financial and technical support is urgently needed to complete the remaining construction, develop exhibition and display areas, preserve and document traditional artifacts, and make the museum fully functional and accessible to tourists and the wider community.

Completing the Tharu Museum will not only help preserve a valuable Indigenous heritage for future generations, but will also promote cultural tourism, create local economic opportunities, strengthen community identity, and provide a meaningful cultural experience for visitors to Chitwan.

We call upon government agencies, donors, development partners, organizations, and well-wishers to support the completion of the Tharu Museum at Phulauria and help preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Tharu people for generations to come.
