Soil and fertilizer requirements for kiwi plantation



Kiwi farming can be done in soils that are rich in organic matter content with good drainage system. Water should not be stagnated and loamy soil is recommended. Drip irrigation is preferred for this crop. Fertilizer application is very essential in winter months which helps longivity of the plants, healthy and regular bearing of the fruits. Compost 30 kg, 120 gN, 60g P2O5 and 60g murate of potash is essential to the plants aged 2-5 years old. Kiwi plants above than 5 years old should be given 2 doko (40 kg) compost or farm yard manure (FYM) per plant per year. In addition, each 5 years old and more aged plants should be supplied with 800 gN, 600 g P2O5 and 800g MoP. N fertilizers should be given in 2 split doses i.e. 400g N in Poush-Magh (Jan-Feb) and remaining 400g N should be top-dressed in the months of Jestha- Asar (June-July). Bone-meal could be beneficial if applied @ 500g/plant. All above mentioned manures and fertilizers should be given in the ring/ trench apart 1 m from the plant. This ring should be 1 feet broad and 1 ft deep. Magnesium should be sprayed if deficient. It can be supplemented by magnesium sulphate or chelated manganese.
