Demand for breeding goats in Nepal
Major demand for breeding goats originates from the agencies providing goats to the ultimate goat rearing farmers selected by them. These agencies include projects under DLS[ DLS: Department of Livestock Services ] (LFLP [Leasehold Forestry and Livestock Program ], CLDP [Community Livestock Development Project ]), PAF [Poverty Alleviation Fund ], and other NGOs. The DLS has regular goat distribution program for past few years (poverty alleviation goat program, income generating goat program, goat exchange program and so on). The DLS and projects under it (LFLP and CLDP) have a goat distribution program of nearly 34 thousands per year in more than 37 districts. The LFLP shares nearly 70 percent of total distribution. The prices for breeding goats are mostly settled through bargaining between the buyers and the sellers. In some districts, farmers affiliated to the resource centers have fixed rate for breeding males and females and are charged accordingly. Such practice is prevalent in Gorkha, Makwanpur, Nawalparasi, Kailali districts. The prices for breeding goats are normally higher by about 25 percent. The prices of goats for breeding and meat purpose in some of the districts are presented below:
