Matsyanarayan

(Sanskrit: Matsya meaning fish, Narayan= a protector Hindu God-form of Lord Vishnu) is regarded as the first incarnation of Vishnu “Matsya Avatar” whose lower half is fish and upper half is human. This incarnation is believed to save Manu, a great teacher and law-giver, from a terrible flood which was about to destroy all life. Matsyanarayan temple situated at south west of Kirtipur is a heritage site rich in natural and cultural beauty.

The temple area comprises of ponds, idols of different deities, chaityas, Vishnudevi temple etc. The hill covered with forest and vegetation creates so fresh environment that one cannot stop feeling calm, quiet and relax being there.

In Nepal Sambat (a lunar calendar), there is a period of extra month called “Manabas” that occurs once every three years. A month long Mela is celebrated during Manabas in Matsyanarayan temple premises. A huge flow of devotees come to pay their homages to the fish-God. During the period of Manabas, the main prayers like “Bhakal Pujas-wish fulfilling prayers” are not entertained even in great temples like Dakshinkali and Manakamana; but the prayers are accepted in this temple.

A 15 minutes bike ride, 30 min ride by bus or about 70 min walk from Kirtipur lead us to the outstanding heritage of Matsyanarayan temple where the visit will definitely be a utilization of time.
