Kal Bhairav

The huge north-facing stone image of Kal Bhairav is undated but it was set in its present location by King Pratap Malla after it was found in Raniban, a field north of the city. King Pratap Malla was a great admirer of art. Whenever he found artistic pieces, he would bring them to the palace and install them there. Some art historians believe that the icon is from the 7th or 8th century. The image of Bhairav represents god Shiva is his destructive manifestation.

A remarkable fact about this icon is that it was made from one rock.
