DashAvatars



On the banks of holy Bagmati river (Bagmati Marg).Along with the maath mandir stands a pillar consisting the Dash Avatars of Vishnu. It is the same avatras shown in Indra Jatra at Trailokya Mohan Narayan Temple at Durbar Square.

Dashavatar refers to the ten avatars of Vishnu, the Hindu God of universal preservation. Etymologically, Dashavatara "Dash" meaning 'ten' and "Avatars", meaning 'descent'). God Vishnu incarnates on Earth from time to time to eradicate evil forces, to restore the dharma and to liberate the worthy ones or devotees from the cycle of births and deaths.

Matsya - fish, the first life in water Kurma - amphibians, living in both water and land Varaha - wild land animal Narasimha - beings that are half-animal and half-human Vamana - short, premature human beings Parasurama - early humans living in forests and using weapons Rama - humans living in community, beginning of civil society Krishna - humans practicing animal husbandry, politically advanced societies Balarama - humans practicing agriculture (also considered to be Buddha as the 9th avatar) Kalki - advanced humans with great powers of destruction
