Expert Care for Throat and Voice Problems with Dr Ravi Seshadri

Your voice is part of how you live, work and connect with people. Whether you spend your day speaking to clients, teaching a classroom, leading meetings or simply enjoying conversations with your family, persistent throat discomfort or changes in your voice can affect more than you might expect. If you have been searching for a throat specialist Singapore residents can consult for ongoing throat or voice concerns, understanding when to seek specialist care is a sensible first step towards protecting your throat health.

At Novena ENT – Head & Neck Surgery Specialist Centre, Dr Ravi Seshadri provides specialist care for throat and voice conditions, with a clinical focus that includes laryngology and phonosurgery. With his experience in ear, nose and throat (ENT) medicine, he helps patients with a range of concerns involving the voice box, speaking difficulties, snoring and other ENT conditions. The aim is to assess the problem carefully and identify an appropriate management approach based on the patient's symptoms and clinical findings.

When Should You See a Throat Specialist in Singapore?

Many people put off seeing a doctor because a sore throat, occasional hoarseness or difficulty swallowing may initially seem minor. While some symptoms improve on their own, persistent, recurrent or unexplained changes deserve medical attention, particularly when they begin affecting sleep, eating, communication or everyday activities. Consulting a throat specialist can help clarify whether the problem relates to temporary irritation, an infection, a voice disorder or another condition requiring further assessment.

A useful way to approach throat health is to pay attention to changes rather than simply waiting for discomfort to become severe. If your voice repeatedly becomes weak, your throat feels strained after ordinary conversations, or swallowing becomes uncomfortable, make a note of when the symptoms started and what makes them better or worse. This information can help your doctor understand the problem more clearly and determine whether specialist investigations are appropriate.

Persistent Hoarseness and Changes in Your Voice

A hoarse voice can develop after a respiratory infection, prolonged speaking, exposure to irritants or excessive vocal strain. However, recurring hoarseness, unexplained voice changes or a voice that does not return to normal should not automatically be dismissed as tiredness. People who depend on their voices professionally may notice these changes earlier because speaking begins to require more effort or their usual vocal range becomes difficult to maintain.

A consultation with a throat specialist in Singapore may be appropriate when voice changes persist or repeatedly interfere with daily life. Depending on your symptoms, the assessment may involve examining the larynx, also known as the voice box, and evaluating how the vocal folds function. The findings help guide the next steps, which may include medical treatment, voice therapy or other specialist management where indicated.

Throat Discomfort and Difficulty Swallowing

A scratchy throat, a sensation that something is stuck, or discomfort when swallowing can have different causes. Some cases are associated with common infections or irritation, while others may require a more detailed evaluation of the throat and swallowing mechanism. Because symptoms alone cannot reliably establish a diagnosis, repeated or unexplained swallowing difficulties should be assessed rather than managed indefinitely with home remedies.

If swallowing becomes progressively difficult, food frequently feels lodged in your throat, or symptoms are accompanied by unexplained weight loss, a persistent lump in the neck or blood, seek prompt medical assessment. Inability to swallow saliva or difficulty breathing requires emergency medical attention. A qualified throat specialist can determine what investigations are necessary and whether further referral or treatment is required.

Snoring and Sleep-Related Concerns

Snoring is often treated as a household nuisance, especially when it disrupts a partner's sleep. Yet persistent loud snoring accompanied by witnessed pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep, morning headaches or significant daytime sleepiness may indicate obstructive sleep apnoea. This condition deserves assessment because disrupted breathing during sleep can affect overall health and daytime functioning.

An ENT evaluation may help identify relevant anatomical or airway factors and determine whether additional sleep assessment is needed. At Novena ENT, Dr Ravi Seshadri's clinical interests include snoring and related ENT concerns. The most appropriate management depends on the individual's symptoms, examination findings and, where necessary, the results of further investigations.

Why Choose Dr Ravi Seshadri as Your Throat Specialist?

Choosing a throat specialist Singapore patients can consult involves more than finding a clinic nearby. Relevant considerations include the doctor's specialist training, experience with the condition, access to appropriate diagnostic services and the clarity of the discussion about treatment options. Patients should feel able to explain their concerns, understand the proposed assessment and ask questions before making decisions about their care.

Dr Ravi Seshadri is an ENT specialist at Novena ENT – Head & Neck Surgery Specialist Centre. His qualifications include MBBS (Singapore), FRCS (Edinburgh) and FAMS (ORL). According to his published professional profile, he has more than 20 years of experience in ENT practice, with particular clinical interests in nasal allergies, snoring, and throat and voice problems affecting adults and children. His background provides a relevant foundation for patients seeking an assessment of voice and laryngeal conditions.

Specialist Experience in Voice and Laryngeal Conditions

Laryngology focuses on disorders of the larynx, including conditions that affect the voice and, in some cases, swallowing. These problems can be particularly frustrating because they may affect a person's ability to communicate comfortably even when the symptoms are not obvious to others. A detailed assessment can help distinguish between different causes and establish a more appropriate management plan.

Dr Ravi Seshadri has a documented professional interest in voice disorders and is known for his work involving botulinum toxin treatment for certain spasmodic voice conditions. His published profile also describes his involvement in a Voice Clinic at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he has continued clinical work and contributed to the training of junior doctors. These are specific elements of his professional background that patients can consider when researching a throat and voice specialist in Singapore.

Care for Adults and Children

Throat and voice concerns can arise at different stages of life, and the symptoms may vary considerably between patients. An adult may be troubled by a voice that becomes unreliable during work presentations, while a child may need assessment for recurring ENT symptoms or other age-related concerns. The appropriate approach depends on the patient's age, medical history, examination findings and individual needs.

Dr Ravi Seshadri's published profile notes that he sees both adults and paediatric patients with a range of ENT problems. If you are arranging an appointment for a child, contact the clinic beforehand to confirm that the specific concern can be assessed and to understand any preparation required. Clear communication with the clinic can make the consultation more straightforward for both parents and children.

What to Expect During a Throat Specialist Consultation

For many patients, the uncertainty surrounding a specialist appointment can be more worrying than the examination itself. Knowing what information to prepare and what the doctor may need to investigate can help you approach the consultation with greater confidence. The exact process varies according to your symptoms, previous treatment and whether any urgent warning signs are present.

Medical History and Symptom Assessment

Your consultation will generally begin with a discussion of your symptoms and medical history. The doctor may ask when the problem started, whether it is constant or intermittent, whether you have experienced changes in your voice or swallowing, and whether factors such as smoking, allergies, reflux symptoms or occupational voice use may be relevant. Bring a list of current medications, previous test results and details of any treatment you have already tried.

These details help provide context for the physical examination and guide decisions about further investigation. It is also helpful to describe how the symptoms affect your routine, such as difficulty speaking for long periods, disrupted sleep or discomfort when eating. If you have specific concerns about possible causes or treatment choices, prepare your questions in advance so that you can discuss them during the appointment.

Diagnostic Assessment and Laryngeal Examination

Depending on the clinical findings, a throat specialist may recommend an examination of the larynx or vocal folds. One available diagnostic technique is laryngovideostroboscopy, which uses specialised visual assessment to examine vocal fold vibration and movement. This can provide useful information when evaluating selected voice disorders, although the appropriate test depends on the symptoms and the doctor's assessment.

Novena ENT lists laryngovideostroboscopy and voice evaluation among its throat-related services. Not every patient requires the same investigation, and a diagnostic procedure should be selected for a clinical reason rather than performed routinely without consideration of individual needs. Your specialist can explain the purpose of any recommended test, what it involves and how the findings may influence subsequent management.

Throat Specialist Services at Novena ENT

Finding a throat specialist Singapore patients can approach for relevant diagnostic and treatment services can make it easier to navigate persistent throat or voice concerns. Novena ENT offers a range of services relating to laryngeal, voice and swallowing conditions, alongside assessment and management for selected snoring-related problems. The appropriate service depends on the patient's symptoms and the outcome of the clinical evaluation.

Voice Evaluation and Voice Therapy

Voice evaluation can help assess concerns such as persistent hoarseness, reduced vocal strength, changes in pitch or difficulty sustaining speech. These issues may affect teachers, sales professionals, performers, customer-facing employees and anyone who relies on clear communication throughout the day. A proper assessment helps establish whether further examination is needed and which treatment approaches may be suitable.

Voice therapy may be recommended for selected voice disorders as part of a broader management plan. Depending on the diagnosis, it may focus on vocal technique, reducing unnecessary strain and developing healthier voice-use habits. Therapy is not a universal solution for every cause of hoarseness, so an appropriate clinical assessment is important before deciding which approach is likely to be beneficial.

Assessment of Swallowing Disorders

Swallowing involves coordinated activity across several structures, so difficulties can arise for different reasons. Some patients experience discomfort, while others report coughing during meals, repeated choking or the feeling that food does not pass normally. A specialist assessment can help determine whether further investigation is required and whether the problem may involve the throat, larynx or another part of the swallowing pathway.

The next steps depend on the symptoms and clinical findings rather than a one-size-fits-all treatment plan. If you have ongoing swallowing concerns, explain whether the difficulty occurs with solid food, liquids or both, and whether it is getting worse. Such details can help the specialist decide on the most appropriate assessment and whether additional medical input is needed.

Snoring-Related Assessment

Patients who snore regularly may benefit from an assessment of their ENT health, particularly when the problem affects sleep quality or is accompanied by signs of possible sleep-disordered breathing. An examination may help identify relevant anatomical factors, but snoring can have several contributing causes and does not automatically mean that surgery is necessary.

Where indicated, the specialist may discuss conservative measures, further sleep assessment or suitable treatment options. The choice depends on the severity of the symptoms, the underlying cause and the patient's overall health. A consultation offers an opportunity to understand the available options and make decisions based on clinical advice rather than relying on assumptions or unverified online remedies.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

A little preparation can help you get more value from your consultation with a throat specialist in Singapore. Record when your symptoms began, how often they occur and whether they are linked to speaking, eating, sleeping or particular environmental triggers. If your voice changes throughout the day, noting when it is at its best or worst may also be useful.

Prepare questions about the likely causes, recommended investigations, treatment alternatives, expected follow-up and any out-of-pocket costs you should clarify with the clinic. If you are seeing a specialist after a referral, bring the referral letter and any relevant reports available to you. For practical details such as appointment availability, fees and insurance arrangements, contact the clinic directly because these may vary according to the circumstances.
